My aunt Terry was visiting from New York and I suggested that she and my mom share some stories from growing up in Gravesend Brooklyn.

Wow! That’s fantastic. I’ve got to do the same thing with my parents. My family, maternal side, lived on East 1st, between Avenue W and Graves Neck–just a couple of blocks from your Mom’s childhood home.

It’s the house in the first photo of this post:

That’s the first place I lived. My parents were married at your Mom’s parish, Our Lady of Grace. My older brother and I were baptized there and my cousins went to OLG parochial school.

My Mom lived there from about age 13 until after I was born. It was the first home my grandparents owned. From the time they married (about 1920) until they bought the house on East 1st Street, they lived in the back of a grocery store and then behind my grandfather’s barbershop. Now that I think about it, they must have lived on East 1st from the mid 40s until the late 60s.
